Transfer Deadline Day Deals???
September 1, 2009
Sky Sources understand Niko Kranjcar has passed his medical at Tottenham Hotspur ahead of his proposed switch from Portsmouth.
A fee in the region of £2.5million is said to have been agreed between the two Premier League clubs, with Tuesday’s transfer deadline looming.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has acted quickly in identifying Kranjcar after the Croatian’s compatriot Luka Modric fractured his fibula at the weekend.
Redknapp worked with Kranjcar during his time at Pompey before leaving the South Coast for White Hart Lane last season.
Kranjcar is set to become the fourth high-profile player to leave Portsmouth this summer, with Glen Johnson, Peter Crouch and Sylvain Distin all departing.
Man City ArticlesBBC Sport’s roving reporter Sam Lyon:
“So why is it so hard to get deals done, then? Leyton Orient chief executive Matt Porter has what I’m sure is a widely-shared theory, telling my colleague Chris Bevan: “The transfer window artificially inflates the value of players because people panic. Joleon Lescott going for £24m has an impact, even in the lower leagues where all of a sudden a player who was worth £1m is valued at £3m and a player who is worth £500,000 now costs £1.5m. Everything inflates artificially because of what happens at the top level and it means doing deals is hard work, sometimes impossible. That’s before you look at player negotiation and wages. It’s a long process.” Who can we blame for a quiet deadline day then? Man City’s Joleon Lescott. Booooo.”
Atletico Madrid defender Johnny Heitinga is at Everton’s training ground as his £5million move to the Premier League edges towards completion.
Reports had suggested the Holland international’s arrival on Merseyside had stalled because of his personal terms.
Heitinga is understood to be on a lucrative salary at Atletico which the Everton hierarchy were unprepared to replicate at Goodison Park.
But differences appear to have been settled ahead of Tuesday’s 5pm deadline after the 25-year-old’s arrival at the Toffees’ Finch Farm training ground.
Heitinga is viewed as a replacement for Joleon Lescott, who joined Manchester City earlier in August, while Sylvain Distin signed from Portsmouth last week.
The player, who has suffered from injuries in the past, will undergo a medical as Everton attempt to beat the clock to complete the transfer.
1556: Aston Villa complete the signing of centre-back James Collins from West Ham on a four-year contract. No price on the official website, but believed to be about £5m.
Aston Villa’s James Collins: “It’s been a mad 24 hours since coming up here but I’m delighted to have it all sorted. I came yesterday and met the manager and had a look around. It’s a fantastic setting. I just can’t wait to get cracking now.”
1554: Deals still expecting to go through include Niko Kranjcar to Tottenham, Richard Dunne to Villa, Mike Williamson to Portsmouth and Johnny Heitinga to Everton. There will be more, though. Will be a manic hour.
